In a strategic move, Bharti Airtel has announced a collaboration with Nokia to deploy a next-generation optical transport network across its national footprint in India. This deployment aims to enhance capacity, increase reliability, and reduce costs, ultimately leading to superior services for Airtel’s customers. The agreement involves the implementation of Nokia’s 1830 PSS-x OTN switches in Airtel’s National Long-Distance Network, connecting major cities throughout the country.

Meeting the Growing Demands for Capacity Networks
The demand for capacity networks is escalating with the advent of 5G networks and the widespread push for broadband connectivity in India. Communication Service Providers (CSPs) are facing increased demands, including the need to augment backhaul transport for denser 5G mobile networks, provide wholesale connectivity for emerging segments like smart grids, datacenter interconnect (DCI), and other business services.
In an official release, it was noted, “To address exponential growth in traffic demand, transport networks need to be upgraded to increase overall transport capacity and bandwidth efficiency using high capacity OTN switching and utilising additional spectrum including the L-band wavelengths of the fiber.”
Pan India Network Upgrade
Nokia’s Optical Transport Network (OTN) solution will facilitate Bharti Airtel in seamlessly upgrading its legacy transport switching infrastructure across its pan-Indian network footprint. This upgrade is strategically designed to meet the evolving demands of new transport network traffic, while simultaneously enhancing the performance and reliability of Airtel’s network.
The increased capacity resulting from this collaboration positions Bharti Airtel to potentially deliver faster and more reliable broadband services.
